A Watched Pot

It is said that ‘a watched pot never boils’: waiting for something, wanting something to happen can often make it not happen. This may well be some aspect of the Law of Attraction. This, as followers of this site will appreciate, is not about getting what we want, or willing things to happen, but rather about the universe responding to our deeper needs.

I had a fascinating example of this yesterday. In this case it was an automatic washing machine not completing its cycle:

The weather looking promising we decided on a day out and that we would get some washing hung out before we went. We set the machine, put the washing in and it tells us it will be ready in an hour. We decide on a train to catch that reflects this.

5 minutes before the washing was due to be completed the timer still shows 15 minutes. 15 minutes later it still shows five minutes … and continues to do show for another 10!

Eventually it does stop and we hang the washing out and go on our outing … but have to take a later train. That trip was full of unexpected events or opportunities or disappointments.

What the technical explanation for the washing machine is I have no idea, but to me it was another example of Life throwing all sorts of unexpected things at me just to give me the lesson of going with a flow, of not trying to plan … of being open to whatever.

I am reminded of the day some decades ago now when every workplace would have a photocopying machine at which there would often be a queue. Occasionally the machine would not work for someone: it would always be the individual who wanted his copying yesterday.

At that time I worked in the electronics industry: an expert in quality and reliability. Knowing how sensitive electronics are I was quite happy to point out that these machines were merely responding to our energy: human willfulness, like static electricity or lightning strikes is not good for electronic devices!

On the other hand, when we are going with the flow, when we are at peace with ourselves, without undue expectations, then a deeper flow will be there … for us to immerse ourselves in.
